Dixie Furniture & Mattress going out of business after 79 years
Third-generation, family-owned retailer begins final liquidation of two stores
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (January 14, 2025) — Voted Best of the Best in Colleton County for at least a decade by The Press and Standard readers, family-owned and operated Dixie Furniture & Mattress announced it is going out of business and will begin total liquidation of its stores in North Charleston and Walterboro.
Cousins Michael, David, and Stan Kirshtein are the third-generation owners of Dixie Furniture & Mattress, a retail business founded by their grandfather, Abe Kirshtein, in 1946. For nearly 80 years, the family and staff of Dixie Furniture have been known for their unwavering dedication to exceptional customer service, a hallmark of the company's success. As the retail business prepares to close its doors, the Kirshtein family reflects on the remarkable legacy built by three generations.
"Dixie Furniture & Mattress has been supported by this community since we first opened our doors in 1946. We are incredibly grateful for the generations of customers who have trusted us to furnish their homes," said Michael Kirshtein. "It's been an honor to carry on the legacy our grandfather started, and we will always cherish the memories we’ve made along the way."
Dixie Furniture & Mattress opens to the public its going-out-of-business sale on January 16. The two stores liquidating are located at 5550 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston and 303 Robertson Blvd. in Walterboro. During the liquidation sale, once-in-a-lifetime prices will be offered on a wide variety of high-quality furniture, mattresses and home accessories discounted up to 65% off. Famous name brands include AW Furniture, Ashley, Behold, Coaster, CrownMark, Fusion, Howard Miller, Mega Motion and Southern Motion.
Both store buildings are for sale and interested parties may contact Michael or David Kirshtein at (843) 747-5784. For more information on the liquidation sale, visit www.dixiefurniture.com.
The Kirshtein family has been serving the Lowcountry for over 100 years. Founder Abe Kirshtein began selling from a horse and buggy on the historic streets of downtown Charleston in 1921. He opened his first furniture store at 533 King Street in 1946. Through his determination, along with his wife, Edith, and their sons, Sammy, Louis, and Sol, Dixie Furniture continued to grow.
By 1961, the Kirshteins opened a second store in North Charleston. Over the last 35 years the third-generation Kirshteins, Stan, Michael, and David, took over the business, opening a rent-to-own store called Speedy Rentals, then a third and fourth Dixie Furniture & Mattress in Walterboro and Beaufort. The Beaufort store was closed in 2004, and more recently the King Street store closed in 2017. Since then, extensive remodeling to the Walterboro and North Charleston stores have kept Dixie Furniture as the leading family furniture business in the Lowcountry.
